Welcome to our first Family Walk. We hope to give your family a challenge and for you to have a fabulous day with us in the Yorkshire Dales.
Pen-y-ghent is the smallest of the Yorkshire Three Peaks at a height of 694m, but a mighty climb. It offers a fabulous round route starting and finishing in Horton in Ribblesdale. The walk will be guided with experienced mountain guides and there will be a checkpoint on the top of Pen-y-ghent to make sure we know that you have got there and we will check you back in bottom for you.
The walk is circular six mile route and has steep climbs. It offers a great family challenge and all in aid of York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity. The team from York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity will be at the start and finish for you and there will be guides with you make sure you are safe. On arrival, we will register you all in and give you a route map for the walk, so the children can see where they will be going. You are welcome to take a picnic to eat at the top and there will be some treats at the finish.
We are also supporting our Yorkshire Three Peak walkers at this event, so there maybe some very tired walkers returning at similar times to yourself, but don't worry, we will be on hand to support everyone.
How long is the walk?
The walk is six miles up and around steep terrain. We expect the walk to take you no longer than five hours.
What age can children take part?
We recommend that children are over seven years of age to take part independently due to the distance and climbing. If you are confident that your child is capable of this walk and is under seven, you are welcome to sign them up. You are welcome to bring smaller children in carry backpacks and they do not need an entry, but please note they will not receive a t-shirt or medal. This is NOT suitable for prams.
Are dogs allowed?
We do not recommend bringing dogs on this walk due to the climbs and the livestock in the fields that you walk through.
What do I get for my registration fee?
You will get a mountain team, who will ensure that you get back safely, an event t-shirt and medal.
What time can I register from?
Registration for the Family Walk is at 09:30am and the walk starts at 10:00am
Where is registration?
Registration takes place in the field where you can also park in the centre of Horton in Ribblesdale.
How much is car parking?
£4 in cash and this payable to the farmer who sits on the entry gate.
Are there toilets?
Yes, there are toilets in the National Trust Car Park across the road but please note there are no baby changing facilities.
Will there be any food available?
We cannot guarantee food. Sometimes there is a food wagon serving hot food but this is not certain. There are two pubs in the village and there is The Station Inn at Ribblesdale- 7 miles away. We would recommend bringing a picnic and snacks for the walk.
Can we raise sponsorship as a family?
Yes you can. You will have an online giving page set up when you register and you can personalise this to share with friends and family.
When do we get our medals?
Medals will be given out once you have completed the walk and then your family will receive a certificate with how much was raised in the weeks to follow the walk.
